As one of the most iconic sights in the Blue Mountains, a trip wouldn’t be complete without watching a sunrise or sunset from Echo Point over the Three Sisters.
The Three Sisters is an unusual rock formation representing three sisters who turned to stone, according to Aboriginal legend. The character of the landscape and rock formation changes throughout the day, and the seasons, as the sun brings out the spectacular colours. Visit at dawn and watch the sun rise behind the Three Sisters, or visit at dusk and watch them light up. The Three Sisters are floodlit until 11pm every night, and look amazing against the night sky.
There are a couple of ways to view the Three Sisters, located only a short distance from Mountain Whispers. Take a seat at Echo Point, and watch the changing light throughout the day, or follow the short walk that gets you even closer to this amazing sight.
The Three Sisters walk is a short 1km return walk that should take you around 30 minutes – plus of course what time you spend at the end of the walk. Walk through the archway next to the Echo Point visitor centre and make your way through eucalypt forest and bird song. Once you get to the Oreades lookout you can view the Three Sisters up close. Take the steps leading to Lady Game lookout – another 50m closer to the formation. Take the short but steep set of stairs at the top of the Giant Stairway to Honeymoon Bridge, which connects to the first sister.
If you feel like tackling a longer walk, the Echo Point to Scenic World walk starts at Echo Point, and follows the Giant Stairway. After taking in the views of the Three Sisters, start the walk down the 800 plus steel and stone steps into the valley. From the valley floor, you can view the Three Sisters from the ground up.
From here, it’s a fairly easy walk along Federal Pass through to Katoomba Falls. Once you get to Scenic World, you can finish your walk via the Furber steps, or jump on the Scenic Railway to the top – the steepest railway of it’s kind in the world.
There are so many places across the Blue Mountains to view a sunset or a sunrise, and if you only have time for one – stop in a the Three Sisters and Echo Point. You won’t be disappointed.
