There’s not a lot that beats a picnic in the summer sun, but add the Blue Mountains to that mix, and you might find yourself picnicking by a waterfall or with amazing views over the valley. With some great summer weather in the Blue Mountains, you’re sure to enjoy getting out and exploring the Blue Mountains region.
We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite picnic spots in the mountains.
Leura Cascades
With a waterfall and great views, Leura Cascades is the perfect picnic spot for photography, walking tracks and a relaxing lunch. The picnic area provides great views across the Jamison Valley, as well as a background of waterfalls and birds chirping away in the nearby forest. After you’ve finished your picnic, take on the moderately challenging 4.5km Fern Bower circuit, or take a walk to discover Bridal Veil Falls, or the Prince Henry Clifftop Walk through to Gordon Falls Lookout.

Wentworth Falls Lake
This small lake is popular with those looking to enjoy the Blue Mountains region. It is popular with those picnicking or model boat enthusiasts and is home to a collection of sandstone sculptures. With a 1km loop around the lake, and a number of water and open forest birds, Wentworth Falls Lake is the perfect place to get amongst nature without travelling too far.
Wentworth Falls Lake is located just off Sinclair Crescent in Wentworth Falls, just a 6 minute drive from Mountain Whispers.
Govetts Leap
Govetts Leap Lookout is popular with those having lunch or a snack before or after their walk. With amazing views over the Grose Valley and Govetts Leap waterfall, Govetts Leap Lookout is a great spot to stop and take a rest, admire the views and get some great photos. With easy access off the Great Western Highway from Blackheath, it’s worth setting aside some time before or after your picnic to discover some of the amazing walking tracks.
Valley of the Waters
With scenic views, lookouts, waterfalls, walking tracks and more, the Valley of the Waters picnic area is a great starting point for a day in the region. Located near the Conservation Hut it’s a lovely place to stop whether you just need a lunch break or are taking on some of the walks – take on the Wentworth Pass loop or take a leisurely after lunch walk to the Wentworth Falls lookout. Finish off your day with a Devonshire tea at the Conservation Hut.
Sublime Point Lookout
Yet another great picnic spot in the Blue Mountains, Sublime Point Lookout in Leura offers a great opportunity for bird watching and photography over valley below. The picnic spot has views over the Jamison Valley and you might even get the opportunity to watch people partaking in some rock climbing. Keep your eyes out for gang-gangs and cockatoos feeding in the area.
Head down to Sublime Point early on a misty morning, and watch Mount Solitary rise through the clouds.
