Autumn has already begun, and before we know it, winter will be here. So what better way to enjoy and embrace the change in weather than escaping the city to the Blue Mountains, relishing in the picturesque scenery, snuggling up on the cosy lounges with a glass of port, and warmed by the heat and sound of a fireplace. To myself, it seems a fireplace is synonymous with the Blue Mountains – I sure cannot think of something more romantic or more comforting than this combination. So I thought it would be fitting to write a blog on building the perfect indoor fire!
Step 1
To kick-start this dreamy, beautiful fireplace, ensure that the flue is opened. To check that the flue is open, you should feel cold air coming from outside down through the chimney pipe
Step 2
Scrunch up some old newspaper and toss into the back of the fireplace, which will serve as our flammable tinder due to its easy ability to set on fire. Stack bits of the kindling on top of the newspaper, ensuring these bits of wood are not wet, green, or rooted. To make sure that the flame catches alight, ensure there are gaps within this pile of wood to allow for oxygen to circulate, which in turn will enable the kindling to burn.
Step 3
With matches, set alight ends of the newspaper in different spots to get it burning quickly. The kindling will then catch alight quite easily, which allows you to add more kindling or bigger logs (just make sure you still leave room for oxygen to flow). Now sit back, and enjoy the beauty that is an indoor fireplace! I recommend a glass of port, a movie, some chocolates …or all of the above! Adding more logs will keep the fire lasting longer, and using a screen protector will prevent any unwanted sparks flying out!
Indoor fireplaces are romantic, charming, occasional, and good for the soul. But furthermore, indoor fireplaces do not use up any electricity! Mountain Whispers is dedicated to the comfort and well-being of our guests and our environment! Building the fireplace will not only save energy, but will create an aroma perfect for your relaxing, indulgent stay at one of our guest houses! All four of our accommodations have gas log fireplaces and one very special fireplace in the bathroom of ‘Leura Rose’ so that you can relax in the bathtub watching the flames dance! But Strawberry Patch has a real fire; so if you fancy having a go yourself, why not book Strawberry Patch this autumn? Sounds like heaven if you ask me!
