Summer is quickly coming to an end, and before we know it we’ll be lighting the fires at Mountain Whispers every night.
But before we say good bye to summer for another year, why not come and explore the Blue Mountains? If you’ve never been before you might be surprised at what you’ll find, and if you have, isn’t it time you rediscovered those places you loved when you were here?
We’d love to share with you five of our favourite spots to spend a few summer days in the Blue Mountains.
Megalong Valley
The perfect location for horse riding, the valley is breathtakingly beautiful, and while it is a farming area, it offers plenty to do for visitors to the region. From the Megalong Valley you can walk some of the Six Foot Track, a 45km track that winds itself through the valley, take in the views from and of Narrow Neck, join a trail ride through the valley or stop for a picnic.

Mount Tomah
Wandering the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens located at Mount Tomah is a great way to spend a day. With 28 hectares of cool climate gardens, you find plants from around the world. There are a number of different sections at Mount Tomah that are a must see including the Bog Garden, the Remnant Rainforest, the Eurasian Woodland, the North American Woodland and the Heath and Heather Garden amongst many others.
Take a self guided walk, hire an iPod Touch from the Visitor Centre and take a self-guided audio tour, or join in one of the free guided walks. The Garden Shuttle will take you on a 20 minute tour of the gardens at 11am, 1pm and 3pm most days.
Katoomba Falls
The Katoomba Falls are just one of many gorgeous waterfalls in the Blue Mountains National Park and you won’t need to go far to see them. They are located walking distance from The Three Sisters and Scenic World, and just a 10 minute stroll from Mountain Whispers’ The Gatsby. The short Katoomba Falls Circuit walk will take you straight past the falls, as will the Prince Henry Cliff Walk, the Echo Point to Katoomba Falls track and many others.
So close to The Gatsby, you could easily do this walk every day of your stay, discovering all the walking tracks within easy access of the property.
Leura
Who wouldn’t love spending time right in the heart of the Blue Mountains in Leura. The vintage styled main area of Leura is an absolute treat when looking for places to shop and dine. Leura Mall is the main street where you will find cafes, restaurants, day spas, boutiques, arts and crafts, artisans and more. Take a walk around the village and explore the tree-lined streets, old cottages and plenty of gardens.
Leura is also the perfect base to explore the Blue Mountains National Park if you don’t have a lot of time. See the Leura Cascades, Gordon Falls, Leura Forest, Sublime Point, Dardenelles Pass, Jamison Lookout, Leura Falls and more. Another great option for the day is the Everglades Gardens. The gardens are a 1930’s National Trust property – explore the gardens and relax with a picnic surrounded by cold climate plants including cherry trees, conifers, maples, oaks and more.
If you visit in spring, make sure you take a stop at the Leura Gardens Festival.
Glenbrook Gorge
The track through the Glenbrook Gorge is perfect for those looking for adventure. You’ll find yourself hopping over the rocks to get to the end of this wonderful trail. The gorge track is short, yet can be a challenging walk in places; however, you will love the scenery and sounds of the eastern area of the Blue Mountain National Park. The walk follows the base of the gorge, and will take you past a historic railway tunnel, built in 1911 (you’ll also find rubble from the construction on the sandbar where Glenbrook Creek meets the Nepean River near the end of the track).
Find somewhere to stop for a few moments and take in the natural bushland, climb out to Lapstone Station, or cool down after your walk with a dip in the Jellybean Pool on the return walk.
The track starts at the National Parks Tourist Centre off Bruce Road in Glenbrook.
